Pininfarina Unveiled Teorema, A Totally Electric And Self-Driving Concept Car

Pininfarina, an Italian design house, unveiled Teorema, a totally electric and autonomous concept automobile with a focus on aesthetics and aerodynamics for future shared mobility. This is the first Pininfarina concept created fully in virtual reality, enabling a more fast and flexible planning process.

Under the supervision of Kevin Rice, Chief Creative Officer at Pininfarina, the Teorema was designed in collaboration between teams in Italy and China. “Teorema aspires to restore people's enjoyment of driving, traveling, and living in cars, without the hassles of increased congestion and other compromises,” Rice noted. Pininfarina combined augmented reality, mixed reality, and virtual reality technologies to create the prototype.

Teorema concept car is designed on a Benteler-developed skateboard EV chassis, which maximizes interior space. It has a length of 5,400 mm (212.6 inches) and a height of only 1,400 mm (55,1 inches).

Teorema was developed from the inside out. The cabin has a unique seating configuration of 1+2+2, with five individual seats organized in three rows. There are no side doors, but the back end opens up and the roof extends upwards and forwards, making access to the cabin simpler. The floor is activated by footsteps guiding passengers to their chairs, which were developed in partnership with Poltrona Frau to provide the customers with "maximum relaxation."

The study was designed to be completely self-contained, therefore there is no traditional steering wheel on the dashboard, only pop-up buttons of various forms that appear when activated. Autonomy, Rest, and Drive are the three driving modes available in the Teorema concept. The driver's seat is facing the passengers in Autonomy function, forward in Drive mode, and flat in Rest mode, producing two benches or cots.

Passengers can use WayRay's True Augmented Reality technology, which displays interactive virtual visuals behind Continental Engineering's Intelligent Glass in the greenhouse.

The aerodynamic silhouette with air channels and ducts for increased efficiency characterizes the external design. The air escapes behind the wide front fenders through a big opening encircled by LED lights on the front end. The lack of panel gaps on the body and greenhouse gives the whole design a lightness.

The short front windshield widens towards the back, where a gorgeous Kamm tail may be found. Parallel lines appear as glass extensions, and the rear fenders are toned down to highlight the futuristic five-spoke wheels. The diffuser is an important feature of the design, and the taillights are made up of a thin LED strip.

Pininfarina Teorema is a design study that explores numerous possibilities for the autonomous future. It is evident that it is not meant for production. However, we wouldn't be surprised if design elements and technologies created for this concept automobile made their way into future production versions.

Automobili Pininfarina, which will shortly begin the creation of its first hypercar, the Rimac-powered Pininfarina Battista, is not the same as Pininfarina. Mahindra & Mahindra owns both firms.
