The BMW UK representative, Matt Collins told Top Gear journalists that BMW will not produce a CLS version for the current models M3 and M4. CLS versions (Coupe Sport Leichtbau) aimed to reduce the overall weight of the car in order to improve performances.
To do that, BMW was using lighter materials like carbon fiber plus giving up some non-essential systems. Collins explained that BMW has already done everything that the current versions M3 and M4 would be as lightweight as it possible. "Both models weigh less than 1500 kg, which is amazing for a car of this size."
Last BMW M3 CSL was one of the E46 generation, built up in an edition of only 1,400 copies and being available only in two colors: black and silver. BMW M3 E46 CSL weighing just 1385 kg, with 110 kg less than the normal M3. Furthermore, to achieve this performance, BMW dropped out a large part of sound proofing elements, audio system, electric windows and navigation system.
Meanwhile, it is possible that soon, BMW will announce the debut of M4 GTS-officially not confirmed engagement. This model would be launched in 2016, and its body would use aluminum extensively carbon elements and leads to somewhere below 1400 kg total weight.
