Mercedes-AMG One One Shatters Nürburgring Record With A Stunning 6:29 Lap
by AutoExpert | 3 October, 2024
The Mercedes-AMG One has officially taken the crown as the fastest production vehicle at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, a title it first claimed in October 2022 with a lap time of 6:35.183. Recently, though, it returned to the track and blew that record out of the water, finishing in an incredible 6:29.090.
This electrified Mercedes-AMG One hypercar, which draws on Formula 1 technology, was driven by DTM racer Maro Engel. He managed to shave off more than five seconds from his previous time, making the AMG One the first production car to break the 6:30 barrier on this iconic circuit—a feat usually reserved for racecars.
Engel set this new record on September 23, 2024, at 6:56 PM, with perfect conditions: dry track, 15°C (59°F) air temperature, and 20°C (68°F) asphalt.
Reflecting on his first attempt, Engel noted that the conditions weren’t ideal, as some parts of the track were still damp. With this new lap, he felt the car was truly able to show its capabilities, expressing gratitude to the entire team for their support.
For the record-setting lap, the Mercedes-AMG One was in “Race Plus” mode, which optimizes performance for the track. This setup lowers the front axle by 37 mm (1.5 inches) and the rear axle by 30 mm (1.2 inches), maximizing the car's active aerodynamics while unleashing a staggering 1,049 hp from its 1.6-liter turbo V6 engine and four electric motors.
Engel skillfully utilized the Drag Reduction System (DRS) and managed the hybrid battery in a smart way, thanks to extensive practice runs on simulators. The hypercar was fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires, designed specifically for the AMG One.
