Land Rover Defender Octa Gears Up For 2026 Dakar In All-New Stock Category

Land Rover is diving headfirst into uncharted territory, officially confirming that the Defender will tackle the 2026 Dakar Rally. The rally version is based on the flagship Defender Octa, which they’re calling “the fastest and most capable Defender ever.”
Moreover, this beast will also compete in the full FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), hitting all five rounds with two cars and adding a third specifically for Dakar.
Here’s the twist: the Dakar-spec Defender Octa will line up in the newly revamped ‘Stock’ category. Unlike the custom-built monsters like the Ford Raptor T1+ or Dacia Sandrider, this category requires vehicles to stick close to their road-going versions. That means the Octa racer will share its D7x aluminum monocoque chassis and BMW-sourced 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with the showroom model, cranking out an impressive 626 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.
JLR Motorsport’s managing director, James Barclay, is hyped. “We now have the right platform to authentically demonstrate Defender’s capability in the biggest challenge in off-road motorsport. The team is already well underway, and we are very much looking forward to competing in both Dakar and W2RC—the world’s toughest off-road events,” he said.
With a full year ahead to prep and test, Land Rover is putting in the work to make sure the Defender is ready to crush some of the most grueling terrain on the planet. Whether it’s Dakar or the W2RC, this Land Rover Defender Octa is about to prove it’s much more than a luxury SUV.
