Shifting Gears: Young Adults Rethinking Car Ownership for Mobility as a Service

Remember when getting your driver's license аnd buying your first cаr was the ultimate rite of passage? Well, it seems like times аre changing, especially for the younger crowd. According to a study by Deloitte, which surveyed 4,240 young adults from around the globe, a good chunk of them—just over half, actually—are open to ditching the idea of owning a car. Yep, you heard right. Instead, they’re all about "Mobility as a Service" or MaaS. Think autonomous taxis, handy bike-share setups, and solid public transport options.

So, what’s driving this shift? It’s all about having a viable alternative. If these services are good enough, more and more young folks might just say goodbye to personal car ownership. The survey included participants from places like India, China, Southeast Asia, Korea, Japan, Germany, the UK, and the US. Interestingly, the enthusiasm for giving up cars varies quite a bit by region. For instance, while 70% of young adults in India are cool with the idea, only 35% of German youths are willing to give up zipping around the Autobahn in their own cars.

But let’s pump the brakes for a sec—there are some caveats with the study. Deloitte wasn’t super clear on where exactly these respondents were from, whether urban skyscrapers or sleepy countryside, which can really skew the results. Plus, the sample size for some countries was pretty tiny compared to their total populations, like only 241 out of over 50 million in Korea.

Car Ownership

Despite these hitches, the survey sheds some interesting light on how young people view car ownership and the future of transport. It also peeked into feelings about autonomous driving and EVs, with quite a few expressing concerns about self-driving tech and a majority still leaning towards traditional gas engines for their next car purchase. In the US, for example, a tiny 5% are thinking of going electric next.

Car Ownership

What do you think about all this? Could you give up your car if the right set of wheels-on-demand services were available? Jump into the comments and let’s chat about this shift from owning to sharing. Just keep it friendly and respectful—this is a community for all opinions!
