The Future Arrives on Hydrogen Wheels: Unveiling the H2X Darling Van Concept by KTM
by AutoExpert | 30 October, 2023
Diving into the future of sustainable transportation, Australian H2X Global unveils its new van concept, meticulously crafted in collaboration with KTM, aiming to lower the production costs of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. The H2X Darling, presented in a variety of bodystyles including pickup, taxi, and van, comes with diverse interior configurations, catering to different needs.
Marking the second venture of H2X following the 2021 Warrego hydrogen pickup based on a former Ford Ranger generation, the H2X Darling was introduced through digital renderings.
It embraces a distinctive design featuring a wraparound windshield, conventional van proportions, clever LED lighting at both ends, and functional sliding doors.
Offered in three dimensions: 183.9 inches, 193 inches, and 209.6 inches, the H2X Darling showcases versatility. The compact version aligns with the dimensions of VW ID. Buzz Cargo, while the larger one enters the realm of VW Transporter and Ford Transit Custom.
These wheelbase lengths provide charging capacities of 162.4 cubic feet, 180.1 cubic feet, and 204.8 cubic feet, comparable to ICE-powered vans of similar dimensions. Boasting a maximum payload capacity of 7,716 lbs and towable weight ranging between 2,205 to 5,622 lbs, the van is designed for practicality.
Resting on the newly developed Smart Chassis architecture, a brainchild of KTM and H2X collaboration, the platform is engineered to cut production costs, offering flexibility and lower maintenance due to its simplified electric engine.
While the specifications of the hydrogen fuel cell remain undisclosed, H2X Global tantalizes with a cruising range exceeding 250 miles between refueling stops.
The taxi variant further entices with its ADAS sensors and 5G connectivity, hinting at a future of smart, sustainable mobility.
The H2X Darling is in its nascent development stage, elucidating why a physical prototype hasn’t been showcased yet. As reported by Autocar, dialogues are underway with a "key supplier" to ascertain the project’s feasibility, marking cautious steps towards validating this green automotive venture.
