Land Rover Defender Faces Lawsuit For Windshields That Can’t Handle Pebbles

Owners of Land Rover Defender models from 2020 and 2022 are suing Jaguar Land Rover, claiming that the legendary off-road vehicle has a flaw nobody anticipated—windshields can break or crack for no apparent reason, even after minor impacts.
Filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the lawsuit claims that dozens of Defender owners have reported this problem to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). One plaintiff, Stephen Seiber, says he got his 2020 Defender in September, but by March 2022, a small pebble caused the windshield to crack, and the damage quickly spread.
When he reached out to Land Rover Boise for a replacement, they informed him that they didn't have any available windshields at that time. A month passed before they could swap it out. But that was just the start. The replacement cracked again in July 2023, setting Seiber back more than $2,100. In March of this year, yet another cracked windshield left him with a repair bill of $2,471.
Chris Robinson, another plaintiff, had it even worse. Over the past four years, Chris Robinson's Defender has experienced five windshield replacements. Five. The lawsuit accuses Jaguar Land Rover of using subpar materials in the windshield or having a structural flaw in the Defender itself, making the glass far too delicate. What’s worse, the suit claims JLR is fully aware of the issue but has refused to address it under warranty.
The plaintiffs argue that the defect poses a significant safety risk—not just for the driver, but for passengers and pedestrians as well—because the windshields crack and shatter unexpectedly, impairing vision and potentially sending shards of glass flying. The lawsuit demands compensation for repair costs and other damages, plus legal fees and court costs. JLR now faces serious scrutiny over a problem that seems at odds with the very ethos of the Defender, a vehicle that’s supposed to be as tough as the terrain it tackles.
