More and more accidents have been happening, which raises lots of questions and too few answers. In order to reduce the number of accidents, the European Union is rolling out some recommendations for the carmakers, including installing speed limiters and black-boxes on the newly produced cars.
These elements shall become mandatory starting with the cars manufactured from 2024, disregarding the class and level of the cars.
Other options joining the aforementioned ones include the alcohol detector, which alongside the black-box will provide information to the law people on the circumstances of a potential accident. There will also be an emergency brake system, lane assistant, a system of stopping the car in case alcohol has been detected, system monitoring of the driver’s attention and tiredness, a rear-view camera, and others.
Many of these systems already include these details in their cars, based on the client’s needs. Now, there will become available on any equipment level. We may already see how the intelligent speed limiter will be giving some headaches to the drivers. This one will be teamed with a GPS, which will provide accurate speed information. In case speed is exceeded, the system will alarm the driver with both visual and sounds signals, and even block the speed pedal.
As for the black-box, it’ll allow stocking precious information like speed during the impact, acceleration and brake pedals’ position, and other important indicators. Police people and insurance companies will have access to these details, in order to set the driver’s profile and risk category.
The `European Commission hopes that these systems will help save more than 25.000 lives. It is up to the car makers to implement these systems so that drivers accept them and do not try to deactivate them.
