2022 Opel Astra Features Stellantis Roots And A Striking New Design
by AutoExpert | 13 July, 2021
Claiming that the 2022 Opel Astra is a big deviation from its predecessor is an exaggeration.
The new Astra, which is also available as a Vauxhall in the UK, is built on the EMP2 platform, which is also used by other Stellantis models such as the Peugeot 308. The new Astra will be offered with a variety of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, according to Opel/Vauxhall.
A 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine with 108-hp and 128-hp is found at the base of the range. There's also a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel with 128-hp. Customers can choose an eight-speed automatic transmission instead of the six-speed manual transmission that comes standard on these petrol engines.
In terms of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), the entry-level model combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 109-hp electric motor for a total of 178-hp. This same 109 hp electric motor is coupled with a 178-hp version of the 1.6-liter turbo-four to provide a total of 222-hp in the flagship PHEV variant. Both models feature a 31-mile all-electric range, thanks to a 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Aside from the engines, the new Opel Astra is 4 mm (0.15-inches) longer than its predecessor with 4,374 mm (172.1-inches). It's also 51 mm (2 inches) wider than the previous Astra at 1,860 mm (73.2-inches) and 15 mm (0.59-inches) shorter than previously at 1,470 mm (57.8-inches). Opel also increased the wheelbase by 13 mm (0.5-inches) to 2,675 mm (105.3-inches).
The exterior design is a major departure from the previous Astra and is similar to that of other new Opel / Vauxhall vehicles. Matrix LED headlights with a gloss black accent link the front end. In addition, the bumper has modest fog lights that are carefully integrated. The black pillars and roof, as well as the sharp body-colored C-pillar, immediately strike the eye when seen from the sides.
The cabin has also undergone significant revisions. The dashboard, for example, is dominated by a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch infotainment screen. In addition, the 2022 Astra has a three-spoke steering wheel and a compact shifter built inside the transmission tunnel. A Head-Up display and a 360-degree camera are two of the most important features.
The pricing for the 2022 Astra has yet to be announced by Opel.
