Motor Trend spies have managed to catch the new Fiat 124 Spider in California as it was driving on the streets of Santa Barbara. The spider is based on the 4th gen Mazda Mx-5 Miata and features longer front, rear overhangs, and a more square style than Mazda. It also has smaller headlights and horizontal taillights which differs from the ones on Fiat 500.
However, most changes that differentiate it from other Fiats can be found in the interior. It borrowed lots of touches from Mazda including the dashboard console, the infotainment center, and the climate control system.
The power for the new Fiat 124 Spider will be provided, most likely, by a 1.4-liter turbo-4 with 180 hp and the 1.75-liter turbo-4 with 240 hp (Abarth variant). The 1.4l engine will be offered either in 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 1.75l version will be offered with a dual-clutch gearbox.
Most probably the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider will debut during Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2015.
