Who’s On Top? The Latest Winners Of The 2024 IIHS Safety Awards
by AutoExpert | 18 December, 2024
The IIHS has wrapped up the year with 19 new models earning Top Safety Pick awards, and here’s how they stack up.
To snag a Top Safety Pick, vehicles need "Good" ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and updated side crash tests. They must also earn "Good" or "Acceptable" ratings for headlights across all trims and demonstrate effective pedestrian front crash prevention.
Winners of the Base Top Safety Pick Award
Nine models made the cut for the standard award:
- Audi Q8
- Ford F-150 (crew cab)
- Ford F-150 (extended cab)
- Infiniti QX80
- Kia K4
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class
- Nissan Kicks
- Toyota Corolla sedan
- Toyota Crown Signia
Many of these could level up to Top Safety Pick+ status if they pass the IIHS’ updated moderate overlap front crash test in the future.
Top Safety Pick+ Winners
The “Plus” designation requires passing that updated test and maintaining top safety standards. The 10 winners are:
- Ford Mustang Mach-E
- Infiniti QX60
- Mazda CX-70
- Mazda CX-70 PHEV
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class
- Mercedes-Benz GLC
- Rivian R1S
- Subaru Forester
- Toyota Tundra (crew cab)
- Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid
With these additions, the 2024 model year now boasts a total of 56 Top Safety Pick award winners. However, not all models successfully completed the test. The Cadillac Lyriq fell short with a "Poor" headlight performance rating, while the Ford Bronco Sport scored only "Acceptable" in the updated side-impact test, disqualifying them from the awards.
