Unveiling the Limited-Edition HPA VR550T: Turbocharged VR6 Upgrade for the Golf R at $40K
by AutoExpert | 25 October, 2023
Just a few months after HPA Motorsports teased an uber-powerful VR6 turbo compressor upgrade for the Golf R, the wait is over—the production lines have officially started humming. Meet the HPA VR550T, a limited-run modification of just 50 units, each packed to the brim with torque and horsepower from a specially-tuned VR6 engine—an engine that, incidentally, Volkswagen discontinued earlier this year.
The Engine
Interestingly, the VR550T isn't for every American motorhead out there. The upgrade features a 2.5-liter VR6, chosen for its lighter weight compared to the 3.5-liter variant found in North American models. Initially designed for the Chinese market under the name DDKQ, the engine was over-engineered to cope with lower fuel quality, making it a prime candidate for high-performance tuning.
To qualify for this HPA upgrade, your Golf R should be a 2018-2019 model outfitted with a DQ381 DSG transmission.
Custom Upgrades
Once installed, your Golf R will boast a custom turbo hybrid HPG, a 76-millimeter valved exhaust by HPA, a new low-pressure fuel pump with an integrated OE controller, HPA-specific tri-flow camshafts, and a tailor-made intake and downpipe combo. An HPA Performance Series bolt-on intercooler enhances airflow for this beast of an engine.
While the engine may be covered, it's no plug-and-play affair; expect to put in some effort to get everything running as smoothly as a factory setup.
Transmission Tweaks
To handle the turbocharged torque onslaught, the dual-clutch transmission gets revamped clutch packs. CNC modifications further tweak the pressure points, release timings, and clamping mechanisms to align with the engine’s new torque profile.
Dash and Finishes
Say goodbye to dash warning lights and lost OEM features, thanks to full UDS CAN bus integration. As a cherry on top, the VR550T features a custom carbon fiber engine cover, serialized plaques in both the cabin and engine bay, and various VR550T badges to make your Golf R truly unique.
The Price Tag
The upgrade itself will set you back just under $40,000, labor included—though this doesn't cover the cost of the Golf R. While it's not exactly a bargain, the awe-inspiring roar of the turbocharged VR6 might just make the investment worth every penny.
And there you have it—the HPA VR550T, a limited-edition marvel that takes your Golf R to a whole new level of performance and luxury.
