Transmission Troubles: Recognizing the Warning Signs
by AutoExpert | 9 April, 2024
Trying to figure out what's wrong with your car is rough. But transmissions? That's a whole special kind of annoying. Luckily, there are some dead giveaways before things get REALLY bad.
What is a Transmission?
Basically, it's the thing that makes your car change gears. Old cars, you gotta do it yourself (stick shift), but most cars nowadays do it automatically.
Signs You Got Transmission Trouble
Won't Go Into Gear: Stick shift and your clutch won't work? Yeah, that's bad. Could be simple stuff, or could be your transmission's toast.
Burning Smell: Smells kinda sweet, but in a bad way? Probably your transmission fluid overheating. Check if it's leaking, or maybe just old and needs changing.
Weird Noises: Whining, buzzing, clunking – that's NOT normal. Get that checked out before it costs you thousands.
Popping Out of Gear: Super dangerous, especially if you're on the highway and suddenly, you're in neutral. Bad transmission.
Clutch Issues: This is for the stick shift folks. Clutch sticks to the floor, gears grind? Could be an easy fix, or could be major.
Leaky Red Stuff: Automatic transmissions have special fluid. See red puddles under your car? That's trouble. Fluid shouldn't leak, period.
Check Engine Light: Could be ANYTHING... transmission sensors are a thing in newer cars. Shop's gonna have to scan it.
Shaking or Grinding: Low fluid might do this, but it could also be way worse. Don't wait on this one.
Delayed Shifting: Whether you have a fancy auto or a stick, it should go into gear smoothly. If it doesn't, that's a sign.
Why's My Car Shaking?
Tons of reasons, but it COULD be low transmission fluid, or something really nasty with your clutch or gears. Better to be safe than sorry and get it looked at.
