The Luxurious Split: How Rolls-Royce and Bentley Went Their Separate Ways

In the realm of British luxury automobiles, few names stand as prominently as Rolls-Royce and Bentley. These brands are not just cars; they are symbols of elegance and refinement. But did you know about the dramatic corporate twist that led to their split?

Rolls-Royce and Bentley: A Century-Old Rivalry
Rolls-Royce, founded in 1906, had already established itself as a beacon of luxury by the time Bentley emerged in 1919. The advent of the Great Depression in the 1930s brought financial turmoil for Bentley, leading to its bankruptcy in 1931. This was the moment Rolls-Royce seized, acquiring Bentley and making it a subsidiary for decades, even through Rolls-Royce’s merger with Vickers PLC.

The Battle for Ownership: VW vs. BMW
Fast forward to 1998, a pivotal year when Rolls-Royce and Bentley caught the eye of major automakers. While a British group of enthusiasts, Crewe Motors, also showed interest, the real contest boiled down to two German giants: Volkswagen and BMW. Volkswagen won the initial bid with a staggering £430 million offer. However, they soon realized they hadn't acquired the Rolls-Royce trademark, owned separately by Rolls-Royce PLC.

A Complex Deal and a Historic Split
The plot thickened as Vickers had to renegotiate, bringing BMW back into the picture. In a twist worthy of a corporate thriller, BMW secured the Rolls-Royce trademark for £40 million and agreed to lease the name to VW until 2003. After this date, Volkswagen would take Bentley, while BMW would take Rolls-Royce.

The End of an Era
Thus, after seven decades, the bond between Rolls-Royce and Bentley was severed. Both brands, synonymous with British luxury, found themselves under German leadership, marking a new chapter in their storied histories.

This split not only reshaped the luxury car landscape but also underscored the changing dynamics in the global automotive industry. Today, Rolls-Royce and Bentley continue to represent the pinnacle of automotive luxury, each forging its path while upholding a legacy of elegance and excellence.
