Oakland's Abandoned Car Epidemic: Streets Flooded with 14,000 Vehicles
by AutoExpert | 22 March, 2024
Things are seriously out of control in Oakland. They've got over 14,000 abandoned cars littered all over the place! Imagine, 14,000! The city's basically run out of tow lots and is desperately renting extra space just to stash them all.
Apparently, car theft is the main issue here. Makes sense, thieves ditch stolen rides and walk away. And here's what's even crazier: the Oakland cops won't even respond to calls about it unless the car's blocking a driveway! You gotta call 311 – can you imagine the backlog of complaints?
It's not just an eyesore. Businesses are getting hammered – cars blocking entrances, even threats from sketchy people hanging around the abandoned vehicles. This dude Bruce Vong, a business owner, said, "If you try to do anything, they'll shoot you." Yikes.
The city council finally did SOMETHING – they're hiring more tow trucks and getting help from the state to use some of their empty lots. But here's the catch: getting the cars OUT of the lots, and back to their owners? That's a whole different mess.
Just like everywhere else, if your car gets stolen, YOU get to foot the bill to get it back from impound. Worse, some cities even auction off cars that sit unclaimed for too long. Imagine losing your car to theft AND some random stranger ends up buying it at auction.
Ugh, this story just makes me angry for everyone involved. Hope they figure out a solution.
