McLaren had used Honda engines between 1988 and 1992, during this period; they won four world titles for pilots and the same number at the Championship for constructors. "In the 80s and 90s, McLaren Honda won 44 races and eight world titles. In 1988 we created the most successful race car of all time, the MP4-4, who won 15 of 16 races with Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. McLaren and Honda are on the way to embark on a new adventure together and I am delighted to wish Honda team welcome back in sport ", said Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren boss at that time.
Now the journalists from Auto car association said that this collaboration could be extended outside the Formula 1: after a discussion with Martin Whitmarsh, he admitted that McLaren and Honda are investigating the possibility of collaborating in series car segment. "At this moment we have no other partner in terms of street cars, and Honda would be the perfect partner," said Whitmarsh in an interview during the Hungarian Grand Prix. McLaren 12C is the current model offered by the British company and the P1 supercar is very close to debut their sales. McLaren is currently working on the model P13, a rival for Porsche 911, while Honda has no involvement in this project. The results of the further cooperation between McLaren and Honda series models will be seen in technical partnerships in which the both brands can take advantage.
