by AutoExpert | 10 January, 2024
Red Bull is set to make waves in the automotive world with the upcoming reveal of the RB17 hypercar in 2024. This marks a significant step as Red Bull wants to introduce a mild-hybrid, 1250 bhp V8 powerhouse.
Team principal Christian Horner confirmed that the Red Bull RB17 is designed with minimal compromises, focusing primarily on track-day applications. The hypercar, due for delivery in 2025, boasts a closed-roof design, and interestingly, it could be made road legal if owners opt to comply with local traffic regulations.
A limited production run of 50 units is planned, and the majority of them are already sold, underscoring the anticipation surrounding this innovative project. Horner described the RB17 as "Adrian Newey unleashed," emphasizing the influence of the Formula 1 superstar designer.
The car, initially codenamed "Eta," aims to fill a gap in Red Bull's F1 car naming strategy, with the RB18 set to be the designated car for the 2024 season. Manufactured predominantly in-house by Red Bull's Advanced Technologies offshoot (RBAT), the RB17 draws on common engineering principles with the Formula 1 car.
Technical director Rob Gray highlighted the hybrid unit's substantial contribution, estimating around 150 bhp, showcasing the commitment to performance and innovation. While powertrain details remain undisclosed, Horner hinted at an impressive sound for the RB17.
With an estimated cost of around £5 million plus applicable taxes, the RB17 emerges as a halo project for Red Bull, signaling the beginning of an exciting journey into hypercar manufacturing.
