Volkswagen 1, Tesla 0: Germany Welcomes a New EV Leader

A seismic shift has occurred in the automotive industry, as Volkswagen has reclaimed the crown for EV sales in Germany. During the first seven months of this year, Volkswagen overtook Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW, largely thanks to its newly launched models like the ID. Buzz passenger van and the ID. Buzz Cargo.

The all-electric ID. Buzz has seen increased production and a surge in interest from customers. Volkswagen sold around 2,900 ID. Buzz EVs in Germany in the past seven months, with 536 vehicles sold in July alone. This model's meteoric rise has transformed it from comprising less than 7% of Volkswagen's EV sales to becoming the leading model in Germany.

Volkswagen

According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), Volkswagen is now at the top of the car pyramid, with 41,475 vehicles sold, followed closely by Tesla at 40,289 units, and Mercedes-Benz trailing in third place with 20,613 registrations. Audi and BMW secure the fourth and fifth places with 16,786 and 15,987 registrations, respectively.

The ID. Buzz may be gaining attention, but the main players in Volkswagen's EV registration are the ID.4, ID.5, and performance models GTX, with a combined total of 22,405 units sold by July. Following these are the ID.3 hatchback with 13,647 registrations and the e-up city car with 2,943 registrations.

Volkswagen

For Tesla, the Model Y led with 75% of total registrations in Germany, selling 29,900 cars in the first seven months of 2023. It was followed by the Model 3 with 9,100 sales, while the Model S and Model X lagged far behind with only 855 and 494 registrations, respectively.

Interestingly, Chinese automakers have made a strong presence in the German market, with brands like SAIC's MG, Geely's Polestar, and BYD selling well.

Despite this shift in the EV landscape, electric vehicles still have not overtaken the sales of internal combustion engine cars in Germany. A total of 268,926 EVs were sold during the January-July period, compared to 1.64 million traditional vehicles.

Volkswagen

This new ranking marks a significant milestone in Volkswagen's journey to becoming a major player in the electric vehicle market. With innovative models like the ID. Buzz and consistent performance from established lines like the ID.4, Volkswagen is asserting its position as a leader in the ever-competitive and evolving world of electric mobility.
