Toyota Teases High-Performance Century SUV GRMN
by AutoExpert | 22 August, 2024
Toyota introduced the Century SUV a year ago, showcasing it with a distinctive Gazoo Racing badge and unique features like minivan-style folding rear doors. However, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda recently confirmed that there will only be one GRMN-spec model of this high-riding luxury SUV.
The standard Century SUV comes with a plug-in hybrid V-6 engine producing 406 horsepower on the TNGA chassis. It remains unclear whether the GRMN version will feature a powerful V-8 engine similar to the one in the Century sedan.
Before the introduction of a new model, Toyota's lineup included only a V-12 engine option. With Akio Toyoda referring to the upcoming SUV as a "full-fat GRMN," expectations are high for a more powerful performance vehicle. The top-tier GRMN models, however, are often limited edition and exclusive to Japan.
Toyota’s GRMN iQ and Aston Martin’s Cygnet were both attempts to balance performance and environmental concerns with compact city cars. Now, with the GRMN Yaris making its way to Europe and hopes for a more accessible Supra in the US, Toyota's GR chief, Tomoya Takahashi, has hinted at the need for a high-performance SUV. Given the Century SUV’s high cost and niche market, it's likely not the model he's referring to.
