The 2016 Prius is one of the first vehicles to be built on the TNGA platform - Toyota New Global Architecture. The new generation features a hybrid powertrain that is supposed to be more fuel-efficient and more enjoyable to drive.
The 4th generation of Prius has improved its CO2 emissions by 18%. Thanks to TNGA the new hybrid is more efficient, weighs less, and performs better. The improved electric motors now provide a better power/weight ratio. The platform also helped the car to lower the height by 0.8 inches.
As for the design, Prius got inspired by the Mirai (hydrogen-fueled sedan) but keeps its familiar lines. It gets a sharper look due to an LED front and redesigned front spoiler and is finished in a shade of red that Toyota calls: "hypersonic red".
Toyota says that they obtained a 10% increase in fuel efficiency from 50 mpg in the old gen to 55 mpg in the new generation.
A new safety feature for the 2016 Prius, called Toyota Safety Sense, offers the driver assistance such a: pedestrian detection, laden departure warning, adaptive cruise control. The same package will become standard for all Toyota models by the end of 2017.
