NHTSA Hits Ford With Record $165 Million Penalty For Safety Recall Delays

Ford’s latest misstep with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has landed the automaker with one of its biggest civil penalties yet—up to $165 million. It’s a hefty fine that comes after years of back-and-forth over a recall that just wouldn’t end.

The story began in 2020 when Ford recalled over 620,000 vehicles, including both Ford and Lincoln models, due to a problem with the rearview cameras. The problem? A circuit board malfunction led to the flickering and failure of the cameras, depriving drivers of a crucial safety feature.

What followed was a mess of delays and lackluster reporting. NHTSA stepped in a year later to investigate, questioning whether Ford was acting swiftly enough and providing enough information about the issue. Ford didn't expand the recall until 2022, and it did so again this past March, delaying it until 2024. NHTSA didn’t take kindly to this long stretch of unresolved issues.

They said Ford had violated multiple provisions of the Safety Act, including failing to act in a timely manner and not submitting the necessary recall reports. Ford didn’t fully agree with the allegations but decided to settle with the NHTSA anyway. So, the automaker is now on the hook for a comprehensive action plan, which includes investing in a high-tech imaging lab and developing a better tracking system for vehicle parts. Ford will also undertake the task of reviewing their previous recalls to ensure no additional issues have escaped notice.

They’ll need to improve their internal processes, speed up recall decisions, and make sure information flows more smoothly between Ford and the NHTSA. As part of the deal, a third-party will keep a close eye on Ford’s progress, ensuring the company sticks to its commitments and meets all safety standards moving forward.

According to NHTSA's Sophie Shulman, "Timely and accurate recalls are critical to keeping everyone safe on our roads," and the agency will take all necessary steps to ensure companies meet their obligations.
