Stella Terra: The Pioneering Sun-Powered Electric Off-Road Vehicle
by AutoExpert | 18 October, 2023
Electric vehicles (EVs) are undoubtedly the future, but charging infrastructure remains a significant barrier in many regions. Enter Stella Terra, a groundbreaking sun-powered electric off-roader that might just revolutionize the landscape.
This revolutionary prototype recently conquered a challenging 621-mile trek across the rugged terrains of North Africa, powered solely by the sun.
A brainchild of students at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, Stella Terra showcases the immense potential of combining compact batteries with solar technology. This combination promises to enhance the range and versatility of EVs, even in tough off-road scenarios.
Wisse Bos, the Eindhoven Solar Team's manager, confidently states that Stella Terra's technology is a decade ahead of any other vehicle available today.
To function as an efficient sun-powered vehicle, Stella Terra had to endure the harshness of off-road environments while remaining light and efficient. Consequently, the Eindhoven Solar Team meticulously engineered the suspension and the solar panel inverters.
Having navigated 621 miles in Africa, starting from Morocco’s north coast through mountainous terrains to the Sahara Desert, Stella Terra's journey was mostly smooth, barring an issue with its steering system.
This sun-powered marvel boasts a top speed of 90 mph. Weighing a mere 2,645 lbs, it's lighter than the Subaru BRZ. Initially estimated to cover 391 miles, Stella Terra exceeded expectations by offering a 441-mile range on sunny days (or 342 miles off-road). On cloudier days, it still managed a commendable 416 miles.
The Eindhoven Solar Team envisions Stella Terra inspiring automakers like Land Rover and BMW to steer the industry towards sustainability. In addition to its innovative technology, the vehicle's lightweight design proved advantageous in off-road conditions, ensuring it never got stuck.
