Audi is already working on the second generation R8 supercar scheduled to appear on market in the next 12-18 months. There will be essential differences between current and next generation model: the first one will have to deal with the total weight of the significantly improved model.
Ulrich Hackenberg, the head of research and development Audi specified at the Motor Show in Los Angeles that German engineers paid high attention to the reduction of weight and promise a future R8 lighter by 60 kilograms compared the current model. Engineers find it difficult to obtain a lower reduction, taking into account that the current model already has a lightweight aluminum structure.
To get rid of several kilograms, Audi would have to move to a completely new platform, more expensive, built entirely from the carbon fiber. If everything is according to plan, the future R8 would boast a total mass of 1500 kg threshold limit, and the platform would be borrowed by Lamborghini Gallardo and his successor.
