Hybrids and EVs: Silent but Risky? Increasing Pedestrian Safety Concerns

There's some buzz аround hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs) thаt might cаtch you off guard—they're kind of steаlthy on the street. Turns out, these whisper-quiet cars are a bit more likely to bump into pedestrians thаn their louder, gas-powered cousins.

A study from the UK popped up with some stats that might make you think twice as you cross the street. Hybrids and EVs are about twice as likely to hit a pedestrian as traditional combustion engine cars. And in cities? That risk goes up even three times. It's not just a UK thing either. Over in the US, research shows that these silent runners are 20% more likely to be involved in pedestrian mishaps, and that risk shoots up to 50% during slow driving maneuvers like parking.

Pedestrian Safety Concerns

Now, don't get me wrong—this isn't about demonizing electric cars. They're great for the environment and offer a smoother ride, but they come with their challenges, mainly because they're so quiet. They sneak up on you, literally! They're often driven by younger, less experienced drivers too, which doesn’t help the situation.

Pedestrian Safety Concerns

Phil Edwards, one of the researchers, shed some light on this. He pointed out that electric cars don't give off the same noises we’re all used to with gas cars. And that's something pedestrians rely on a lot to stay safe. He suggests that if we’re really pushing for electric cars on the road, both drivers and pedestrians need to step up their game. Drivers need to be extra vigilant and pedestrians might need to rethink how they listen for cars.

Pedestrian Safety Concerns

Edwards also highlighted that EVs tend to speed up quickly and weigh more, which can mean longer stopping distances. That means a bit more care is needed when driving one of these near folks on foot.

Pedestrian Safety Concerns

The takeaway here? If you're behind the wheel of an EV, just be extra careful, especially in busy areas. It's all part of adapting to this new, quieter side of driving. And hey, maybe it’s time for some updated road safety rules as we gear up for a future filled with these stealthy vehicles.
