ESP, (electronic stability programs) can help prevent a crash even in the most difficult conditions of ice and snow, or something unexpected suddenly wanders onto the road like a deer.
The video below by "CarAdvice" gives an example of what a difference these systems make, and it shows two attempts, one without the ESP and one with the system activated.
The first attempt is a disaster, and the car, driven by a "pro", slid straight missing the cones by some distance.
Then with the systems turned on it becomes a walk on the park, everything the same except the electronics are activated to provide control.
