Deepal G318 SUV: The New Range-Extended EV on the Block
by AutoExpert | 19 January, 2024
A week after images featuring the new Deepal G318 SUV flooded the internet, the first real-life photos of the vehicle surfaced, thanks to Chinese regulators. G318 is the third model of Deepal’s lineup, a brand owned by Changan, and got its name from Highway 318 on the China/Nepal border.
It was designed as a boxy SUV, with dimensions around 193 inches in length, 78.1 inches wide, 74.2 inches tall, and sitting on a 113.3-inch wheelbase.
Taking into account that it’s an EV, it features a rather unconventional front-end without a main front grille but does sport a large intake lower down on the front bumper. The images also spotlight black body cladding and LED headlights. Among other black finished elements, count in the wing mirrors, the flared wheel arches, thin LED taillights running vertically, and a spare wheel carrier - which are visible from the back.
The G318 also sports a rear bumper that has been blacked out and a place for a towbar. Moreover, the spare wheel carrier can be switched in favor of a small storage box, while Deepal can also furnish the SUV with roof rails bracing four notable forward-facing driving lights.
As it features a 1.5-liter petrol engine with 147 hp, the G318 is a range-extended EV; however, the engine serves as a generator but does not power the wheels. The entry-level model couples the engine with a single electric motor at the rear wheels with 250 hp, while the flagship model couples the 1.5-liter engine with two electric motors, which are linked to fire up 430 hp.
Details regarding the vehicle’s battery pack haven't been confirmed yet , but we suppose that it will house a lithium-ion phosphate pack from CALB that will be provided in 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh aptitude.
The local sales in China have not started yet, but when it happens, we predict that the starting price will kick off 42.000 USD.
