Changan's Deepal Introduces The G318, A Limited Edition Rugged SUV

China's upcoming rugged SUV, the G318, under Changan's sub-brand Deepal, promises exciting off-road prowess and road-tripping comfort. Named after the Chinese national highway 318, this boxy and attractive vehicle is expected to hit the market at around 300,000 yuan.
Standing at 187 inches, it aligns in size with the extended-wheelbase Volkswagen Tiguan.
Under the hood, the Deepal G318 features a unique 1.5-liter engine that acts as a generator, charging two battery options: 18.4 kWh and 35.1 kWh. While precise details on driving range and horsepower remain undisclosed, it's equipped with dual motors, providing power to all four wheels.
Reports from China's Autohome suggest individual motor ratings of 47 hp and 80 hp, hinting at a capable but not overly powerful performance. The G318's design captures attention with C-shaped DRLs, off-road lights, and distinctive silver sections on the bumpers resembling underbody protection.
Interestingly, despite expectations of body-on-frame construction signaling off-road comfort, the G318's name ties to a highway rather than a trail. The Chinese national highway 318, connecting Sichuan to Tibet, inspires its nomenclature, suggesting a focus on comfortable road trips.
Deepal aims for the G318 to be a reliable tow vehicle, and there are rumors that it could perform tank turns, offering a unique feature to impress buyers. When it hits the road, it's set to compete with formidable rivals like the GWM Tank and the BYD FangchenBao in the rugged SUV market.
