Breaking Speed: The Battle for the Fastest Car Title
by AutoExpert | 9 April, 2024
You gotta start with the basics – those old guys racing on salt flats? That's where land speed records started. It's gotta be two runs, averaged out, to be official.
The Boring (But Official) Answer
Technically, this jet-powered thing called the ThrustSSC holds the record from like, the '90s. Broke the sound barrier and everything. But come on, is that even a CAR?
Fastest Real Car... It's Messy
This Swedish hypercar, the Koenigsegg Agera RS, hit an average of 277 mph – that's legit, people were there watching. Then Bugatti tried to one-up 'em with this modified Chiron going 300+. Doesn't count in my book.
Then there's this American company, SSC, and their Tuatara. They said they hit over 330, but the video looked fake, and Guinness wasn't even there! They redid the run, got like 280-something... respectable, but no cigar. Then the car CRASHED on the way to try again. Oof.
So, Who Wins?
Honestly, for now, gotta give it to the Koenigsegg. Sure, other cars might be FASTER, but were the runs legit? Did they even SELL more than one of the things? It's a whole debate.
Places to Hit 300 mph? Yeah, Good Luck
You think you can just floor it on the highway? There's like, MAYBE five places in the world long enough and safe enough to even try. Most of these companies use old NASA runways and stuff.
