BMW M3 And M4 Competition Gain xDrive Promises A 3.5 Seconds Acceleration

BMW shared more intriguing details unveiling the next M3 and M4 Competition versions. It is official now - the Competition model variants got the M xDrive with good performance ratings. Powered by the well accustomed twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, the engine produces 503 horsepower and 650 Newton-meters of torque, coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an M-specific all-wheel-drive system.

The most interesting about the M versions is the system's “electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case for smoothly adjustable, fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels.” Also, the German manufacturer pointed out an Active M differential - a specially engineered drive- and output shafts. The transfer case features a bespoke control unit that allows for integrated wheel slip limitation.

The Gain xDrive's all-wheel-drive system was developed with three different modes and a rear-biased default setting. 4WD Sport brings extra torque rearward, while the 2WD model is perfect for those who need all-wheel drive on occasion only.

As usual, the automaker equipped the M Competition models with a redesigned double-joint spring strut front axle and a retuned steering ratio. This way, the company wanted to ensure both "the existing pure rear-wheel-drive variants and their new M xDrive siblings standing out with their engineered-without-compromise, signature M steering characteristics.”

There is more to it. An upgraded engine oil supply system and an M-specific traction control system dubbed the Dynamic Stability Control system to “produce a supremely dynamic driving experience blending the customary M feeling with noticeably enhanced traction and directional stability.” The 19- and 20-inch forged wheels with a Jet Black finish give us a luxurious look.

With this new AWD system, both models reach a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in just 3.5 seconds and a 180 mph (290 km/h) top speed. The M3 and M4 Competition models are expected in Germany this midsummer and should hit the American market until August. The price could exceed $76,900 for the sedan and $78,800 for the coupe. There's also a $995 destination charge.
