Alfa Romeo (Almost) Owned By Volkswagen

Volkswagen is known for its passion to “collect” car brands, like Audi, Porsche, Bentley, and Bugatti. But why stop here? Why not buy all car brands? For example, we’ve recently found out that ex-Volkswagen boss Ferdinand Piech, intended to buy Alfa Romeo.
Too sad it didn’t come through, as this transaction would have been beneficial for both brands. Volkswagen would have strengthened its position as an iconic brands’ owner, while Alfa Romeo would have bloomed under Volkswagen’s management, just like all other brands have.
Piech has always been fond of Alfa Romeo and even had several public speeches where he expressed his desire to own it and even have Porsche run it. While not managing to see his dream come true during his management years, Piech kept insisting on the idea and presented it to Herbert Diess, whom he asked to meet up with Mike Manley – FCA’s helmsman at that time.
Diess respected Piech’s wish and asked if the brand was for sale. Of course, it wasn’t. But, boy, it would have been great if it were. The Italian carmaker is currently fighting some financial issues, so never say never. Chances are Volkswagen will end up buying it, after all.
