Unveiling the Thrill: The Engineering Marvel of Funny Cars

Let's face it, funny cars are awesome. They're loud, they're fast, and they look, well, funny! But have you ever stopped to wonder what's actually going on under that wild paint job (or wrap, as we'll get to in a sec)?

Alex Conway, the Car Chief at Don Schumacher Racing, is here to give us the lowdown!

Funny Cars

First up: History Lesson! Funny cаrs burst onto the scene in the mid-1960s. They got their funny nаme because, well, they looked funny.  Remember those stretched monster trucks?  Same idea, but way faster and way cooler.  The altered wheelbase (think super long back tires, shorter front ones) is what got them the nickname "funny."

Funny Cars

Now, let's talk about that wild paint job (or wrap)! Actually, it's usually a wrap.  Why?  Because vinyl is lighter than paint and way easier to fix if you get a little… "racing aggressive" with another car.  Each driver and team has sponsors, and those sponsors get their logos plastered all over the car – basically a rolling billboard for speed!

Funny Cars

But enough about looks, let's get to the guts!  Just like your car, funny cаrs have a windshield (mаde of super strong Plexiglаss for less weight) to protect the driver from the wind and any flying debris.  But here's where things get crazy:

Funny Cars

Tires: Those massive back tires are what put all that engine power onto the ground. They're smooth for maximum grip, while the front tires are smaller because, hey, it's a straight line race—fancy steering isn't really needed. Just imagine the size of those back tires – we're talking about 117 inches in diameter!

Funny Cars

G-Forces: Hold on tight! Funny cars accelerate SO fast that the driver experiences a whopping 6 G's during a run. That's more force than an astronaut feels during a space shuttle launch! And when the car finally stops, it's like getting slammed backwards with -5 G's. Talk about whiplash!

Funny Cars

Parachutes: Yeah, you read that right. Funny cars need parachutes because those brakes alone can't handle all that speed. They're made from Kevlar, which is super strong and fire-resistant, just in case things get a little too hot (literally).

Funny Cars

So, the next time you see a funny car roar down the track, remember all the amazing engineering and guts that go into making that happen. It's a wild ride, and these drivers are the ultimate thrill-seekers!
