Toyota GR86 Hakone Edition Returns For 2025 With Exclusive Upgrades
by AutoExpert | 15 July, 2024
Toyota debuted the Hakone Edition, a U.S.-market variant of the 86, in 2020; the model was named after Japan's renowned Hakone Turnpike. This unique model, based on the revised GR86, is making a triumphant return for the 2025 model year.
It will have a Ridge Green finish, based on the GR86 Premium grade. As standard equipment, you'll find a pair of attractive 18-inch wheels finished in matte bronze, together with a prominent ducktail spoiler located at the rear.
Other notable features include a Hakone badge and several black accents. Similar to the recently introduced GR Ridge Green Limited model in Japan, the 2025 GR86 Hakone Edition is also completely in stock. Like the regular model, the JDM version boasts an eye-catching exterior finish and comes in a limited quantity of 200 units.
We expect the United States version to be significantly more accessible, with a manufacturing set of 860 units. Inside, you'll find a redesigned shifter, a GR limited edition plaque, Ultrasuede, and tan leather sports seats, among other features. For the 2025 model year, Toyota has also made updates to the other GR86 models. New shock absorbers are the first upgrade, and they promise better handling.
Manual-shift versions now have easier throttle mapping, while those with engine torque control have better throttle response and linearity. The electric power steering has also undergone some changes, making it seem more responsive. Both a six-speed manual and an automatic gearbox are available to go with the powertrain, which remains a 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.
A Torsen limited-slip differential is standard on both models. There is a new Sport mode for automatic transmission models that enhances shifting, and a Track mode for manual transmission versions that makes things somewhat crisper. Toyota will announce pricing information for the 2025 GR86 in the United States later.
