The New BAIC BJ40: A Fresh Face in the World of Compact SUVs
by AutoExpert | 23 August, 2023
BAIC has stirred the automobile world by releasing official photos of the second generation of its BJ40 model. This body-on-frame, ICE-powered compact SUV is a notable departure from the original BJ40, which first appeared in 2013 and bore similarities to the Jeep Wrangler and Range Rover.
While its predecessor was available in two-door, four-door, and pickup variants, the new generation embraces a single bodystyle. The freshened look, inspired by the larger three-row BJ60, marks a significant step forward for the model.
The exterior boasts all-terrain tires and generous ground clearance, signaling this is no ordinary road-focused SUV. The illuminated boxy LEDs, combined with a rugged off-road bumper, lend a bold and modern aesthetic.
Inside, high-tech features abound. A digital instrument cluster flanked by a large central infotainment screen and a dedicated front passenger display exudes sophistication. Aluminum-style trim accents the dashboard, while the wide center tunnel houses a rotating dial for the 4WD system.
The specs of the new BJ40, shared by China's Ministry of Industry and Technology Information, reveal an SUV that measures 188.6 inches in length, 76.4 inches in width, and 74.6 inches in height, with a 108.7-inch wheelbase. This makes it 6.3 inches longer than the five-door generation and even longer than the Jeep Wrangler.
Powering the BJ40 is a robust 2.0-liter petrol engine, delivering 241 HP and 284 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and a 4WD system, the new model promises more potency than its predecessor and outpaces competitors like the Tank 300, at least on paper.
The world will get a closer look at the BAIC BJ40 when pre-sale begins on August 25 in China at the Chengdu Auto Show. Pricing details are yet to be revealed, but Car News China predicts a range of 28,000 - 41,600 USD.
Whether the new BJ40 will follow its predecessor in being sold at export markets under the Ickx brand remains to be seen. But what is clear is that BAIC's new offering brings a fresh and exciting twist to the compact SUV segment.
