Tesla Cybertruck vs. Porsche 911: The Ultimate Drag Race Showdown
by AutoExpert | 20 May, 2024
Hey gearheads, buckle up! Remember that crazy claim Elon Musk made about the Cybertruck towing a Porsche and beating it in a drag race? Yeah, us too. Everybody was skeptical, so MotorTrend decided to settle this themselves with a good old-fashioned drag race rematch!
Here's the thing: in December, Musk said his souped-up Cybertruck, the "Beast," could tow a Porsche 911 and still outrun the Porsche solo. He even showed a video, but something felt fishy. That race just seemed...off.
So, the guys rented a dragstrip, grabbed a slow-ish 911 (gotta give the Cybertruck a fighting chance, right?), and borrowed that same 845-hp Cybertruck Beast. They even brought in some expert car dudes to witness the whole thing. Transparency is key, folks!
The Race: Science vs. Hype
The team treated this like a scientific experiment. Everybody wanted to see WHY the winner won, not just who crossed the finish line first. Plus, it has been figured out that Tesla gave the Cybertruck every advantage, so these guys did the same.
For the Porsche, they snagged a manual transmission 911 Carrera T – not the fastest, but definitely not a slouch. They even weighed it down with...well, everything that wasn't bolted down. Floor mats? Gone. Owner's manual? Adios. They even debated ripping out the seats, but hey, gotta draw the line somewhere, right?
On the other side, the Cybertruck Beast was a borrowed monster, practically humming with electricity. MotorTrend even juiced it up with its long-term Ford F-150 Lightning before the race, just to make sure it had all the juice it needed.
The Showdown: Reality Bites
Here's the not-so-shocking truth: the Porsche 911 Carrera T absolutely smoked the Cybertruck Beast in all six races ran. Not even close. The Porsche registered it i just 12.5 seconds at 115.6 mph, with the Cybertruck lagging behind at 12.7 seconds and a measly 105.2 mph. Ouch.
Tesla's Video: Not the Whole Story
Remember that video Musk showed? Turns out, it only captured an eighth-mile race, not the full quarter-mile. Even in the shorter distance, the Porsche still dominated. Tesla claims simulations showed the Cybertruck would win the full race, but frankly, we're not buying it.
The Verdict: Busted!
No matter how you spin it, Elon Musk's claim falls flat. The Cybertruck just can't outrun a Porsche, even with one in tow. It's a cool stunt, sure (we did something similar with a Tesla Model X a few years back!), but for a giant corporation to make such a claim without proper testing? Not cool, Tesla. Not cool.
So there you have it, folks! The truth is out: a Tesla Cybertruck cannot tow a Porsche 911 and beat it in a drag race. Time to add that to the list of things Tesla hasn't quite delivered on yet.
