Solid State Porsche 911 EV Supposedly Under Development
by AutoExpert | 30 March, 2022
The classic Porsche 911 sports vehicle is the only model in Porsche's portfolio that isn't going electric. For as long as it's allowed, the company will continue selling cars with internal combustion engines. Despite the obstacles, the manufacturer is looking into synthetic fuels as a way to make it possible. However, it now appears that an electric Porsche 911 may be closer than we previously thought.
According to Electrek, an article in Germany's Manager Magazin discusses not only the development of an electric 911 but also the possibility of it being driven by a lithium metal solid-state battery provided by QuantumScape, a US-based battery company in which Porsche's holding company Volkswagen owns the majority stake.
QuantumScape received a $100 million investment from VW in 2018, followed by a $200 million investment in 2020. It has so far raised over $1 billion in additional funds, which it claims it will use toward developing a solid-state battery for automobiles.
According to the source, the electric 911 will be released before the end of the decade. Despite this, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume stated that a 911 BEV would never be produced, implying that they will be hybrids rather than completely electric vehicles.
Toyota, on the other hand, intends to use a solid-state battery for the first time in the next-generation Prius rather than in a fully electric vehicle. Perhaps Porsche will take a similar approach.
