The Fiat Concern wants to replace the platform that will power the future Alfa Romeo models with a rear-wheel drive platform (together with Maserati wants to give birth to a modular platform, which will lead the apparition of some crossovers and sedans). The platform, besides the fact that it will be removed from the Italians portfolio the currently available hatchbacks (MiTo and Giulietta), might make the Italians more competitive against its German rivals. The mid-range sedan that would receive the new platform is Giulia â 159`s replacement. Currently, the project is in the feasibility study and has not yet been approved for production. The sources cited by Automotive News say that, the first production models should begin in 2015, which gives the Italians time to decide the future of the new platform. In addition to Giulia model, the platform would equip a new flagship of the Italian manufacturer, an E segment sedan or even bigger. Initially, Alfa Romeo wanted to replace the 159 model in 2014 with the Giulia. The new D-segment model of the Italians should have been equipped with a CUSW platform (Compact US Wide), launched with the Giulietta and increased for the Dodge Dart. Moreover, Maserati could also use the future platform to integrate a V6 twin-turbo engine and an automatic transmission with eight reports.
