Navigating the Night: How to Combat Harsh Headlights and Improve Nighttime Driving
by AutoExpert | 25 April, 2024
Anyone else feel like they're going blind every time they drive at night? Turns out, there's reasons, and it's not just those jerks with blinding aftermarket headlights. This engineer dude made a video explaining all the BS:
- Your Eyes Hate You: Pupils get HUGE at night to see better. Great, except now those blinding headlights are even worse, AND if you have any vision problems (nearsighted, astigmatism, whatever)... forget it.
- Trucks Don't Help: Those high-up SUV headlights shining right in your face? Yeah, that's part of the problem.
- Blame the LEDs: The old yellow headlights were bad enough, but these new white/blue ones? Your eyes literally freak out at them because of the way they scatter light. That's why you see those weird streaks coming off them.
Okay, so we REALLY need new headlight laws, but what do we do NOW? This guy suggests a few things:
- Clean Freak: Wash your windshield OFTEN. Dirt and gunk seriously make the glare even worse. The same goes for your glasses! Get those lenses squeaky clean.
- Anti-Glare FTW: Those fancy lens coatings that cost extra? Turns out, they actually help with this stuff, might be worth it if you hate night driving.
- Dial It Up: Try cranking your dashboard lights brighter. Sounds weird, but it tricks your eyes into seeing a bit better in the dark. He even recommends eye supplements, which, hey, can't hurt!
- Eye Doc Time: This is the annoying one, but seriously – get those eyes checked, even if you don't think your prescription changed. Turns out, even small vision problems make the whole headlight thing so much worse.
This probably won't magically fix EVERYTHING, but hey, gotta try SOMETHING, right? The whole headlight situation is seriously messed up, and it's not getting better anytime soon...
