Lotus Revealed 450kW Electric Car Charger That Offers 80 Miles In Five Minutes

Lotus is making a big entrance into the electric vehicle landscape with the unveiling of a robust 450kW electric car charger, scheduled to hit European markets in the coming year. This charging technology is not just for Lotus owners; it's designed for charge point operators, fleet providers, and dealerships.

What sets it apart is its ability to deliver more than 80 miles of range in a mere five minutes, positioning it as a competitor to Tesla's charging capabilities.

The charger can handle up to four cars simultaneously, though typical use accommodates two fast-charging outputs. Lotus highlights its effectiveness, particularly for vehicles equipped with 800V charging hardware. This innovation comprises a cutting-edge 450kW direct current charger, a power cabinet, and a charging unit. One key feature is a cooling system that allows for higher charging speeds by managing temperatures, showcasing Lotus's commitment to future-proofing its technology.

Lotus

In comparison to existing chargers, the Lotus system outpaces the UK's current leader, Gridserve, offering a faster rate of 450 kW and taking just 15 minutes to add 100 miles of range. Notably, when tested on the Lotus Eletre R SUV, the charger added an impressive 88.5 miles of range in just five minutes, outperforming Tesla's Superchargers, which take the same time to add 75 miles of range. Addressing the need for reliable EV infrastructure, Lotus emphasizes that the system was born out of the public's demand for dependable charging options.

Lotus

Citing research indicating that 80% of UK buyers are discouraged from purchasing an EV due to unreliable infrastructure, Lotus aims to be part of the solution. The planned rollout of this charging infrastructure in the UK and wider Europe in the second quarter of 2024 aligns with Lotus's Vision80 strategy. This strategy aims to position Lotus as an all-electric global technology brand for its 80th anniversary in 2028.

Lotus

Lotus CEO Phil Popham underscores the importance of Vision80 in establishing the right infrastructure for long-term success, emphasizing product development and securing the right talent. As governments worldwide invest in electrification for a net-zero future, Lotus is positioning itself at the forefront of the EV revolution with this cutting-edge charging solution.
