It's Official: The 2023 Ford Puma ST Powershift Has Arrived
by AutoExpert | 9 March, 2023
The recently introduced 2023 Ford Puma ST Powershift has been revealed, offering a powerful version of the 1.0-liter mild-hybrid engine and a seven-speed automatic gearbox as an alternative to the 1.5-liter manual variant.
The upgraded engine features a turbocharged 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost with a 48V system, generating 168 hp and 248 Nm of torque, which are the highest figures among all other versions of the same engine. However, it falls short of the non-electrified 1.5-liter EcoBoost's 197 hp and 320 Nm of torque found in the Puma ST.
To achieve a 10% power increase compared to the lesser Puma ST-Line, Ford made some changes to the powertrain's software and improved the mild-hybrid system. The 48-volt lithium-ion battery is now able to recharge faster, allowing the belt-driven integrated starter/generator to boost torque at lower engine rpm and add up to 10 hp of extra power. The seven-speed dual-clutch Powershift transmission has also been optimized for better performance, allowing triple downshifts through the dedicated paddles and holding gears longer in "Sport" drive mode.
The Puma ST Powershift can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 7.4 seconds, which is 1.6 seconds faster than the ST-Line and only 0.6 seconds slower than the manual version. The new model is also more fuel-efficient and cleaner, with a fuel consumption of 6.3 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 144 g/km.
Despite the powertrain upgrades, the 2023 Puma ST Powershift looks identical to the regular Puma ST. Still, Ford has added a new Azura Blue exterior color option with an optional gloss black roof for the 2023 model year. The official press release does not mention anything about the pricing of the 2023 Ford Puma ST Powershift. It is possible that the pricing details will be announced by Ford at a later date.
