The most environmentally friendly version of the bestselling SUV, the Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid, has just been introduced in the United Kingdom. A 1.6-liter T-GDi four-cylinder engine works in tandem with a 66.9 kW permanent magnet traction electric engine and a 13.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery system to drive the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid.
The powerplant produces 261 hp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque, helping the SUV reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 7.9 seconds and peak out at 119 mph (191 km/h). A six-speed automatic gearbox operates alongside the powerplant and electric motor.
According to Kia, the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid has an overall fuel efficiency of 252 mpg (1.12 lt/100 km) and a standard all-electric distance of 43 miles (69 km), and a WLTP city cycle endurance of 48 miles (77 km).
A new and improved combustion process, revised cooling mechanisms, and friction-reduction solutions, along with an incorporated thermal management system, are now available for the four-cylinder engine. On a combined cycle, the SUV emits just 25 g/km of CO2.
The SUV also comes with Kia's Hybrid Starter Generator component and Hybrid Power Control Unit, which improve performance and lower noise levels. The integrated charger supports charging speeds of up to 7.2 kW. This is Kia's fastest-charging plug-in hybrid, with a battery that takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to fully recharge.
Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid will be available in four trim levels in the UK. The GT-Line, which starts at £38,393 ($50,102), is followed by the 3, which starts at £39,595 ($51,671), the 4, which starts at £41,795 ($54,542), and the GT-Line S, which starts at £43,795 ($57,152).
Client deliveries will begin in April.
