New Ford Nugget Campervan: A Blend of Comfort and Efficiency
by AutoExpert | 25 August, 2023
Ford is setting a new standard in the world of campervans with the reveal of the new Nugget, based on the Transit / Tourneo Custom generation. This multipurpose vehicle offers all the amenities needed for a comfortable camping experience, combined with the prospect of better driving dynamics and eco-friendly powertrain options.
Exterior Design
From the outside, the Nugget resembles any other Transit / Tourneo Custom vehicle, but with some unique features. The roof integrates a pop-up mechanism, and there's a Westfalia-branded extendable awning on the right-hand side. Unlike its predecessor, the new generation does not offer a fixed high-roof option.
Interior Comfort
The real magic of the Nugget lies inside. In partnership with Westfalia, Ford has transformed the interior into a versatile living space with separate zones for cooking, living, and sleeping. Up to four individuals can sleep comfortably, and the layout allows for free movement even when the double beds are set up.
Kitchen & Shower Facilities: The L-shaped kitchen is situated at the rear of the van and is equipped with all essential amenities, including a fridge, gas stove, and sink with lukewarm water. A hot/cold shower outlet is also conveniently located nearby.
Tech Upgrades: Noteworthy technical features include a 7-inch touchscreen for climate control, 5G model connectivity, USB-C ports, battery level monitoring, and a new audio system. The exterior table and chairs are also standard and have a special compartment for storage inside the vehicle.
Powertrain Options
The Nugget offers a plug-in hybrid option, featuring a 2.5-liter petrol engine and a single electric motor that produces 229 HP. With an 11.8 kWh battery, it provides a zero-emission range of 50 km in the standard Transit/Tourneo Custom. The ICE-powered variant comes with a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel engine generating 170 HP, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and all-wheel-drive variants are available.
Pricing and Availability
The Ford Transit Custom Nugget was showcased at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, Germany, where Volkswagen also unveiled its rival, the upcoming California, based on the T7 Multivan. With similar features to the Ford Nugget, the California is set to be a main competitor in Europe's burgeoning one-tone campervan market.
Available now at Ford automakers, the Nugget's prices start at $83,102 in Germany. Diesel-powered Titanium trim models will see their first deliveries in spring 2024, with the plug-in hybrid following within the next 12 months.
The Ford Nugget campervan stands out as a well-designed and efficient choice for camping enthusiasts. With its blend of comfortable living spaces, essential amenities, and cutting-edge technology, it's an attractive option that aligns with the growing demand for versatile and eco-friendly campervans.
