Chinese-Built Ford Bronco Unveiled with Unique Badges and 271 HP Engine
by AutoExpert | 14 September, 2023
Ford is expanding the reach of its popular Bronco by introducing a Chinese-built version manufactured by the Jiangling Ford joint venture. While the official debut is pending, images of the Chinese-spec Bronco have emerged from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, showcasing some distinctions compared to its U.S. counterpart.
Distinctive Design Elements
All the Bronco models featured in the gallery are of the four-door configuration, each displaying unique wheel designs, bumpers, and fender extensions, corresponding to various trims.
Notable differences from the North American model include the Ford lettering on the Bronco-branded grille, clear reflectors, and Chinese characters on the tailgate.
Specs and Dimensions
According to data from China, the ladder-frame SUV measures approximately 4,800-4,825 mm (189-190 inches) in length, 2,070 mm (81.5 inches) in width, 1,990 mm (78.3 inches) in height, and boasts a wheelbase of 2,950 mm (116.1 inches). While the width and wheelbase mirror the North American Bronco, the length and height vary, potentially due to different equipment.
Powertrain
The Chinese-spec Bronco is equipped with a locally manufactured turbocharged 2.3-liter engine from the Changan Ford joint venture. This powerplant produces 271 horsepower (202 kW / 275 PS) and 455 Nm (335.6 lb-ft) of torque, slightly less powerful than the entry-level U.S.-spec model with the 2.3 EcoBoost engine. The transmission is expected to differ as well, featuring an 8-speed automatic instead of the American 10-speed auto, with no manual option.
Affordability in Mind
Production of the Bronco by Jiangling Ford is scheduled to commence in 2024. The locally-produced Ford Bronco is projected to have a starting price of ¥300,000 ($41,243), making it significantly more affordable than imported U.S. versions, which typically range from ¥700,000-1,200,000 ($96,233-164,971). Alongside the Bronco, Jiangling Ford also manufactures the Ford Ranger, providing Chinese buyers with more budget-friendly options.
