Ariel Atom 4R Smokes Top Gear Track With 1:13.7 Lap Time
by AutoExpert | 2 January, 2025
Thirteen years ago, the Ariel Atom V8 stunned the automotive world with its blistering performance, posting a 1:15.1 lap around Top Gear’s test track. That time crushed the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport’s 1:16.8 and set a new benchmark for lightweight performance cars.
While Ariel no longer offers a V-8-powered Atom, the new Atom 4R proves it hasn’t lost its edge. Under the hood is a 400-hp version of the Honda Civic Type R’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, paired with a six-speed sequential transmission. Top Gear recently tested the 4R in its ultimate spec, which includes a high-downforce aero kit, sticky tires, and an arsenal of performance upgrades.
With the Stig behind the wheel, the Atom 4R shattered expectations, clocking a 1:13.7 lap. That makes it the 15th quickest car ever tested by Top Gear, including race cars. Among street-legal machines, it ties the McLaren 675LT for 6th place—an impressive feat for a car that weighs less than 700 kg.
