Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and MIT did research to warn the drivers that the permanent evolving automotive driving aid technologies are no reason for fully trusting the system and relax.
Yes, these are a futuristic dream come true and it is true that in time that will be possible, but for now you still need to focus on the road and keep your hands on the steering wheel.
According to IIHS research, the so-called phenomenon is called “driver disengagement” is the evolving automotive technologies that might erode safety under the guise of progress. The motorist focuses less while utilizing the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping features. The Tesla’s Autopilot, Cadillac’s Super Cruise, and Mercedes-Benz’s Intelligent Drive still have trouble on the road features. The driver still needs to be focused on the road.
The research was simple:
They split the subjects into two different groups by ten for each one. While a group had to drive fully automated Land Rovers and the other had the partially automated Volvo. After 30 days of driving, the results have shown 12 times more attempts to remove their hands from the wheel due to the trust over the AutoPilot.
This could have a dangerous turn actually. Until a safer auto-driving assistant software, please be careful.
