The Disappearing Act: Why New Cars Lack Spare Tires
by AutoExpert | 11 April, 2024
So, you're car shopping, and notice a lot of new models don't come with a spare. What the heck, right? Here's the deal:
Run-Flat Tires: The Fancy Option Some cars (especially BMWs) have these special tires that let you keep driving (slowly!) for a while after a puncture. But they're expensive to replace, so... meh.
Saving Money (But Not YOUR Money) Honestly, it probably costs the car company less than $100 to include that spare. So, why not? They claim it's about weight savings...
Fuel Efficiency = Marketing Gold Lighter car = better mileage, and that's what they put in the ads. Even if it's only a tiny improvement in reality.
Hybrids & EVs: Where's the Battery Gonna Go? Those things take up SPACE, and often that leaves no room for the spare.
What This Means for YOU
Car companies say they got rid of spares 'cause customers didn't care. Turns out, when you get a flat, you DO care. Here's the thing:
Manufacturers changing their minds: Hyundai now puts spares in some cars they didn't before. Others might follow.
Do your homework: Find out which companies still put spares in, and which ones don't.
Check your own car! Seriously, don't get stranded and THEN realize there's no spare.
Side Note: Those Inflator Kits...
They're the new thing instead of spares. Pros: small, easy to use. Cons: only work for small punctures, and won't help if it's in the tire's sidewall.
