Sure, it's been done before but the Howmet TX is the only jet turbine car to win a race! Petrolicious gives the TX engineer an opportunity to tell the story of this incredible car which was an experiment built back in 1968.
The TX helicopter engine put out over 350Hp at 65,000 rpm and they employed some engineering tricks to allow the TX to run at 80% throttle permanently keeping the turbine spinning at its optimum power.
The TX proved itself against the Porche 907 and Ford GT40, however, due to reliability issues the project was not able to move forward.
