Elvis Presley’s Lavish Love for Cadillacs: The Tale of a $44,349 Seville

Did you know that Elvis Presley's passion for Cadillacs went way beyond just owning them? The King of Rock 'n' Roll, known for his lavish lifestyle, once splurged an eye-watering $44,349 on a Cadillac Seville – and that's a story worth diving into.

This 1976 Cadillac Seville wasn't just any car. At that time, the newly launched, downsized Seville was a symbol of innovation for Cadillac, capturing the heart of none other than Elvis. But here's where it gets interesting: The Seville’s base price was around $12,479, yet Elvis shelled out nearly four times that amount. How did a car with limited options to ramp up the price tag end up costing so much?

Elvis Presley

The Mecum auction house reveals that Elvis did indeed write a check for $44,349, backed by the documentation they have. But the Seville that caught Elvis's eye wasn't your standard model. It had undergone some serious upgrades, though none that you'd think would quadruple its price.

Let's delve into what made this Seville stand out. We're talking about a car decked out with period-specific upgrades: aftermarket chrome, flashy grilles, and those iconic wire wheels. There was also a nifty switch for the fog lights and upgraded tires. But the real showstopper was its two-tone paint job, a rare sight for a Seville in those days.

Contrary to the flashy exterior, this Cadillac came out of the factory in a single shade of Crystal Blue Firemist. The two-tone option didn't even exist for the Seville until 1978. So what we had here was a custom job that predates Cadillac's own fancy Elegante version.

Now, about that hefty price tag. When we look closely at the paperwork, it turns out the car was sold for $17,927, not the $44,349 on Elvis's check. So where did the rest of the money go? Well, Elvis wasn't just shopping for himself. He was known for his generosity, especially towards the Denver Police who often acted as his bodyguards.

Elvis Presley

During one of his trips to Denver, Elvis went on a car-buying spree. He visited Jack Kent Cadillac and picked up three Cadillacs, including the custom-painted Seville, as gifts for Denver Police Detective Petrifaso and two women in his entourage. This Seville, likely the detective's gift, was just one part of a larger gesture of gratitude from The King.

Elvis's car shopping didn't end there. He reportedly bought more cars for the Denver police during his visits. While we know that Elvis owned over 200 cars, this doesn't include the numerous vehicles he gifted to friends, family, and those who looked after him on his tours.

Elvis Presley

This particular Seville, steeped in history and a testament to Elvis's generous spirit, is estimated to fetch between $30,000 and $40,000 at auction. But for any car enthusiast or Elvis fan, the story behind this Cadillac makes it truly priceless.
