Auto Nightmares: The Most Terrifying Car Experiences Shared by Enthusiasts

Halloween might be the official spooky season, but let's be real – sometimes the worst scares happen behind the wheel. We polled the Auto Express crew to share their most terrifying car stories. Some cars were scary-powerful, some were scary-bad, and others just had terrible timing. Ready for some collective spine-chilling?

The Horrifying Rides We'll Never Forget

We've all got a few car stories that stick with us, and usually not in a good way...

Auto Nightmares

  • The Alfa That Almost Roasted Us: We test drove a classic Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti, a hot little Italian ride with a buzzy engine. Great, right? Well, this one was fresh from restoration, meaning the suspension was loose, the battery was weak, and yeah...that temperature gauge climbed steadily as we drove. Talk about a sweatbox!

Auto Nightmares

  • The Priceless Jaguar Panic: Imagine handling a classic Jaguar sports car worth more than most houses. It's stressful! The cramped space, the heavy controls, and oh... the sudden downpour on that open-top car while surrounded by other vintage beauties in a public parade? We nearly died that day. But somehow, also one of the best drives we've ever had.

Auto Nightmares

  • Land Rovers: Built for Trauma: Those old-school Land Rovers are designed for the apocalypse, not comfort. Steering? Awful. Clutch? Leg workout. But the worst was the pouring rain with that pathetic windshield. We still cringe thinking about it.

Our Colleagues Share Their Nightmares

Turns out, we're not alone in the automotive fear department:

  • When a McLaren Met a Newbie: Picture this: one of us drives a McLaren 570s – crazy powerful – on debris-covered island roads after handing the keys to a guy who had basically never driven a supercar before. That was the longest hour of our lives.

Auto Nightmares

  • The Fastest EV Might Also Be the Spiciest: We got to drive the world's fastest electric car. It's a new company, and their last model was known for, uh...going up in flames. Toss in a foggy mountain road? Yep, that was scary.

Auto Nightmares

  • The Cursed C5: The Sinclair C5 was supposed to be the future, but it was basically an unstable tricycle. Uphill is all you, downhill feels like highway suicide, and getting there takes forever.

Auto Nightmares

  • The SUV That Broke Our Spirit: One of us had a new SsangYong Korando that turned into an electrical nightmare. Dead batteries, flashing lights, breakdown calls...it was possessed!

Got a better horror story than these? Let's hear it!
