The Tokyo Auto Salon showcased the revamped 2024 Toyota GR Yaris, surprising enthusiasts with an automatic transmission option and various exterior and interior updates.
The standout feature is the addition of an eight-speed automatic transmission, named the Direct Automatic Transmission, aiming to enhance the GR Yaris's appeal and broaden its market.
Despite a 40-pound weight increase, this single-clutch unit is designed to boost acceleration. Under the hood, Toyota fine-tuned the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, increasing direct injection pressure, installing a new intake air pressure sensor, introducing lightweight pistons, and adjusting the intake air pressure.
Japanese models now boast 300 hp at 6,500 rpm and 296 lb-ft of torque, significant upgrades from the original 268 hp and 273 lb-ft. In terms of design, the 2024 Toyota GR Yaris receives tweaks like a new bumper with distinctive air intakes at the front and LED taillights with a light bar at the rear.
Inside, Toyota refreshed the interior with a driver-focused dashboard housing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a repositioned infotainment display tilted 15 degrees towards the driver, and a driver's seat lowered by 1 inch.
Drawing inspiration from rally design, Toyota ensures practicality by moving the hazard light and start/stop switch for easy access while wearing a seat harness. Overall, the GR Yaris continues to evolve, blending performance enhancements with a refreshed aesthetic and driver-centric features.
