At its annual press conference, Volkswagen's commercial vehicle division announced the launch of a new California model based on the Multivan, which will feature various connected features.
The company also intends to broaden its California offering by providing digital services to the California community and introducing new services to complement vehicle purchases. The CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Carsten Intra, stated that the goal is to provide customers with a unique "California feeling."
Volkswagen's latest Multivan model, which is the seventh generation in the Transporter van series, has adopted a different approach compared to previous models. Unlike its predecessors, it does not use a van-specific chassis but instead uses the MQB architecture that was originally designed for cars like the Golf but has been adapted for use in commercial vehicles.
Volkswagen's Multivan eHybrid model combines a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce a total of 215 hp. It can travel up to 82 miles in all-electric mode. The Multivan California is scheduled for release to the public in 2024. Volkswagen has also announced plans to expand their camper van lineup in 2025 with the introduction of the all-electric ID Buzz California.
